From the Back Cover
All the animals are in a panic. The elephant's sneeze would blow the monkeys out of the trees, the feathers off the birds, the stripes off the zebra. Even the fish and the fly, the crocodile and the kangaroo, know what a catastrophe that sneeze would be. "Please don't sneeze!" they beg. . . .The classic story of an enormous sneeze in the marking, told in sprightly nonsense verse, has been newly illustrated in full color to delight a new generation of fans.

I was given this book back in 1987 as a gift. It's a fun story about an elephant warning his animal neighbors about his impending sneeze. It was a great story and my father read it to me and my siblings almost every night. I recently purchased it for my niece so my father can read it to her. It is a funny little book perfect for young children and the story is interesting enough to encourage children to read it themselves as-well. Also the illustrations on each page are colorful and drawn in such away you can see the reactions of the animals which perfectly accentuate the words written on the page.
I remember my mom reading me this book to me as a child, along with "There are Rocks in My Socks Said the Ox to the Fox" by the same author. I used to laugh and laugh and get her to read it again and again. When I saw this book, I had to get it for my nieces and nephews, just for the nostalgia and to see if they would laugh like I did. It's a great book, even if you think the animals should have just run away (my nephew said that). Loved by me, for sure, and my 4 year old nephew thinks it's funny, too. The illustrations are realistic-ish and wonderful, they definitely add to the story.
My 3yr old daughter likes this story. I can tell she likes a book when she constantly asks questions throughout the story. However, Im just not a fan of stories that rhyme. I think they are a little silly and always feel the author has to limit the story to words that rhyme as opposed to fleshing it out naturally. But then again Im not the intended audience. I like the incorporation of all the different animals.
A classic favorite. Fun to read out loud over and over again. Great for 2-5 year olds. It's entertaining and easily holds my son's attention. All four of our children have enjoyed this story.Makes an excellent gift. The hardcover copy is of excellent quality.
I first read “Stand Back,†Said the Elephant, “I’m Going to Sneeze!†when my children were little, and now all these years later, it still brings a chuckle or two. The story is written in rhyme with lots of humor by Patricia Thomas, and Wallace Tripp’s artwork is charming. If you can get your hands on a copy of this delightful picture story book, it would be a perfect gift for the young ones in your life. All of the animals panic when the elephant says he going to sneeze. “Beware, beware,†Called the bees to the bear. “The elephant says he’s going to sneeze.†“Oh, please, Not a sneeze,†“That’s not fair. I declare, The last time he sneezed he blew off all my hair, And left me so bare I spent the whole winter in long underwear –I love children’s books, but this is undeniably one of my favorite. I give it 5 stars.
I first encountered this book over 20 years ago when it was given to us for our children. It is the hilarious story of the reactions of the other animals when, as the title states, the elephant announces that he has to sneeze. The objections and pleas of the other various animals are each quite funny, the pictures help children to understand the animal's concerns/fears, & the rest of the book is unbelievably uproariously hilarious (I refuse to spoil your enjoyment by going into the details). The poetry of the text is reminiscent of DR. Seuss, but in my opinion, BETTER!Both boys & girls enjoy this book. I have read it to an assortment of kids at a birthday party for my boys (20 some years ago) & recently have given it to my godson for his daughter and also have given it as a birthday gift for a friend's daughter- it is ALWAYS a hit! I highly recommend this book for children age 3 up to 9 as well as for their parents/grandparents, etc. Older kids may also enjoy it, if only in their memory. Guaranteed to please!
We read this to our boys when they were growing up, now reading to the grandkids. A fun interesting book. Entertaining as Seuss but it makes sense!
Our children are now reading this to their children who laugh just as much as we all have for many years. The writing is ingenious and the illustrations are amazing and hilarious. This is a book that you will pass down for generations and will be proud to give as gifts to those you love.
