"Tommy James's story is one of the most interesting of any of the 1960s rockers. . . . His story reads like a music-industry version of 'Goodfellas.'"--Denver Post“A boisterous memoir . . . It’s high time that [Tommy James] had a book to himself.” —Janet Maslin, The New York Times"Tommy James' rock & roll education cost him millions, but at least we got this entertaining memoir."--Rolling Stone"This is one helluva story."--Howard Stern

This was a fascinating story. Having been born in 1953 I listened to ALL the musical artists and bands that James mentioned in his personal story (including him). And it's a story worth reading! It moves right along, revealing the start of Tommy's career, the many bands and band members he was with throughout his rock and roll period of fame, his personal life. The drama of being produced (virtually owned) by big wig of the industry, Morris Levy was quite a ride within Tommy's life. The mention of so many other bands, etc. that James knew or was popular with at the same time is worth the read. But the story of Tommy James & The Shondells is much more than that! And there's a very popular artist around 1974 that Levy attempts to make his next cash cow. I'll leave it there. Read this book, especially if you grew up listening to TJ & The Shondells.

Just got it yesterday, not a big reader, BUT I am a BIG music buff...have had a hard time putting it down...got a "like new" hard copy, hate paperbacks, great shape, wish it had the dust cover...only for the pictures!... Great read so far, Tommy James was one of my favorites, never knew of his "involvement"...LOL...brings many of the 60's & 70's into perspective! I actually met, (and had a lunch, paid by him), when he was at the long gone Candlewood Theater in New Fairfield CT... Long story short...we, my friends, helped him out with some equipment issues that he had....he was very gracious and just a very nice guy! I've had the fortune to meet some pretty big celebrities just by virtue of where I live...Paul Newman, Robert Redford, of course Joanne Woodward, and several others...only saw them in passing, actually talked, shook hands with Tommy...he'd never remember me, but I do!...I know, it sounds like a school girl crush, but he was/is a gentleman of his generation!!!...hard to find!

I've been a Tommy James for over 50 years. Wore out my Crimson and Clover 45 real fast. Was always intrigued by the sound he created. Tommy has a style geared to crisp vocals and most memorable guitar riffs. But, I was always fascinated as a child with the label pressed on the 45's- Roulette. Loved to watch that label spin while listening to TJ. This book truly defines the real underworld driven record company. I now have a different feeling about Roulette Records- and not a good one. However, I have grown to love Tommy James even more as a person through reading this book. His life started as pure luck thanks to a Pittsburgh radio station plugging Hanky Panky in a local market to a rapid rise to fame shortly after. Even though Morris Levy the thug that ran the record company dictated TJ's every next move, and should I say how he cheated TJ out of tons of royalty money, he was needed for TJ to get the boost needed to make him a star. Tommy's love and hate relationship is beautifully logged in this book. The detail is magnificent. Once you start reading this book you will not put it down. Tommy's real life is fascinating. When I see the Roulette label spin now on my vinyl collection, I see this record company in a different life and also see how truly amazing Tommy transformed his life through the Roulette experience. On the personal side, I finally got to see Tommy James live at the San Diego Fair on the day Michael Jackson died. Ironically as the concert played in that sad afternoon, MJ died. Tommy did not know of the event as neither did I. His concert was spectacular. Tommy left the stage during an extended playing of Mony Mony to greet the crowd. He even went to the handicapped area of the concert to personally shake hands and kiss the ladies who unfortunately were wheel-chair bound. He even posed for me to take his picture. Three hours after the concert Tommy was still talking to his fans. And, if you visit his website you can purchase cd's and this book personally signed by Tommy. I picked up the out of print Travelin' album with a Tommy's solo album combined. I highly recommend this book to any Tommy James fan. It was a great ride and thank God his ride still continues!

The Mob! I honestly only read this book because I wanted to read about the people responsible for killing a favourite artist of mine. This recently outed fact is covered in another book but I think I wanted a more in depth look at what I am now aware of is a psychopathy of the most brutal order. I have listened to Tommy James and The Shondell's, a lot! It was good to know the story, I will never say that I understand everything, but from what I gathered in this read it seems that Tommy James was a corporate slave who knew that he had to do exactly what was expected of him or risk murder! I am not sure I can ever understand the mentality but I do understand how some people are forced into a form of slavery for another's profit, this is a tale of such a story. I guess for me it proves that karmic justice beats the heck out of human so called justice and works really well, just deserts all around. It was good to hear Tommy's explanation of how they created such classic and timeless hits and the process explained may not mean much if one has no knowledge of recording studio technology or how to create certain sounds. Tommy's attention to detail in explaining this is much appreciated because the music he was responsible for recording to this day has yet to be successfully matched. He was a creative artist, in a period of heightened musical creativity.Personally, I found the book a good enough read, but I didn't come away feeling like there were any heroes, it actually made me feel depressed for awhile, that is the reason for the three stars. I hope that the people who were hurt by this ruthless record exec and his henchmen have found a way to heal after all this time, that's all I can say.
