Brian Herskowitz's book Process To Product is infinitely more valuable to a nascent screenwriter than the many books on the market that wallow in abstraction and platitudes. Even those books which accompany expensive lecture courses don't offer the same amount of truly practical advice that Herskowitz does in his book. Though I'm not a highly experienced as a screenwriter I do have many years in the industry and I can say with complete confidence that Brian Herskowitz and his book are the real deal. If there was no more in the book than his advice on story development it would be worth twice the price, yet there's a great deal more and all of it is hands-on and practical. Also worthy of note is that Herskowitz is a working writer and producer in Hollywood and he lives his own advice every day.I've read it twice now, with more to follow. This book is a must.
With no shortage of screenwriting books, lectures, blogs, podcasts, and YouTube interviews, the modern TV and feature writer has, perhaps, more open doorways into the creative workings of professional writers than ever before. This is really a formidable tool for new and/or struggling screenwriters. I was lucky enough to witness Herskowitz's creative and screenwriting experience "live and direct" in a workshop and with his book, the learning has no other option but to stay with you. To have ideas and creative ways to express them is not enough when it comes to delivering a solid screenplay and with this book, chances are, you will make a bullet proof one. Brian's book delivers knowledge, techniques and his own professional career experience in the screenwriting process a very clear and encouraging way. It just makes you feel confident that your most outrageous ideas will find a way to become a good script.
Brian's book stands out from the field in so far as it's "conversational tone" successfully engages the reader and involves them in the "lessons" set out by Brian. Stories-leading-to-examples-leading-to-lessons is an effective methodology barely noticed by the reader because of Brian's tone and engaging style. Yet at no time is the substance of the "learning" lost due to the style of presentation.Seasoned, as well as beginning writers are recommended to this delightful book.
There are screenwriting books, then there is Brian Herskowitz's "Process to Product." Anyone can espouse theory. What Brian has done is written a clear, concise manual for screenwriters that enlightens as well as entertains. Most of all, as director Ken Kwapis mentions in a testimonial, Brian truly does get one excited about the process. All of this, and Jason Alexander has written the Forward. As a screenwriter, you cannot go wrong with these voices of experience. Brian's bold tome gets an easy 5 stars from me.
Brian Herskowitz presents his philosophies in a very entertaining and easy to read book. I have read many books from Snyder to Field before reading Herskowitz's book. I had more "ah ha!" Moments in this book than Any others. He has his format that he calls "guideposts".The guideposts give you a good line to follow, but it's not so strict it will stifle your creative process.An important book for any aspiring screenwriter
I have purchased a many screen writing books and to be honest I never got past the first few pages. Confusing, over-analyzing. It's all exactly why some of us have problems going from concept to product. TOO MUCH! This is so simple, and it's a good-easy-fun read. I still have it next to my bed as I finish the feature length script that I started after I read the book.
I've read a lot of screenwriting books, and this one stands apart for it's clarity, level-headedness, and understanding of what kind of stories audiences are looking for. Without ever seeming pretentious or pedantic, Herskowitz manages to clearly show you how to conceive a satisfying, ethical story before walking you through how you can go from an idea to a polished script. This is an invaluable book for both beginners and people who have read deeply on the subject, and it's an easy read to boot! Can't recommend it enough.
