What a wonderful way to explain the value of individual differences to elementary school age children. The author gets children laughing by using outlandish examples like a woman with hairy feet, a monkey with monkey bars growing out of his ears, twins with an extra pair of eyes, and a potter who has more arms than he knows what to do with. Then Huss moves on to examples with which children will be familiar. They understand that having freckles or pimples, being obese or bullied, suffering from allergies, asthma, hearing or vision impairment can lead to bullying. Huss concludes that such a lack of kindness should not lead to shyness or being upset, but to an understanding that being unique makes one special.I love the message. Parents and teachers will want to turn to this book over and over to answer the inevitable question, “Why Am I So Different?,†and “How Should I Feel About It?â€
Who among us has never felt that they were somehow different from everyone else, that something wasn't quite right, just a little askew? And yet, it is those who were most different who have become our great leaders and sources of inspiration. This wonderful book helps children look beyond their differences -- theirs and those of their peers, friends and family members -- to focus on what is most important.By recognizing that, in their heart of hearts, everyone feels they have some difference whose advantage is not obvious, this book helps children accept themselves and those in their community. Even more importantly, this book -- with its cute characters and outlandish characteristics -- helps children see the value of everyone around them. Armed with such insights, a child can feel confident in reaching out to those with apparent disabilities or other particularities and know that those who seem different have an enormous gift to contribute. What's more, a child who feels that somehow she or he is askew can rest assured that the difference is not what is important – and need not be get in the way of doing great things. This is truly an amazing book to help our children one day become our leaders who focus on inclusivity and positive contributions by all!
We love this book. We’ve read it several times and have used it to start wonderful conversations about disabilities. It is fun and puts a positive spin on something that others might consider a disadvantage. It’s a really good way to explain to young child that people with special needs are just as divine as everybody else.
The author knows her stuff and how to write books for children. No matter what makes you different, you are still special. Sally Huss explains this in a fun, rhyming book with drawings that are unique and fun. If you know and love a child then you have to grab one or more of this author's amazing books.
This book is great. I will certainly read it to my great grand kids. It is very important for parents to read to their young children as it will help combat bullying which has become so prevalent in our society. Excellent job to Sally Huss for addressing this issue.
How brilliant Sally to create this book which is so inclusive of "us" who are different.I recognized myself with several of the examples given and appreciate that there is an "up" side to each one, so that i do not feel shame at being different. Instead i can see others as being simply different and each with their own gifts.Parents, siblings, grandparents, other relatives, friends, neighbors, teachers can all enjoy reading this book and sharing the discussions which follow as their children begin to "see" with kindness vs judgement. So creative and kind Sally!
Once again, Sally Huss gives her readers the gift of entertainment while at the same time relaying an important message. To accept and be accepted is an essential ingredient of a kinder, gentler world. And for young people, who are just learning the rules of life, this story clearly illustrates this concept. The story begins with such humor- children will love the lady with hairy feet and man with monkey bar ears! And they will appreciate the all-to-real afflictions that make many seem "different." This is yet another excellent children's book by Sally Huss that all will enjoy and learn from. Well done!
Sally's extraordinary imagination and gifted artistic ability really shine at the beginning of this book, but when she gets down to the nitty gritty of the reality of the vast range of struggles so many children have to deal with the true beauty of this book emerges. Thank you, Sally!!!!
